DIRECTORS STATMENT
Los Angeles is the loneliest place I’ve ever lived in. I come from having grown up
in the jungle of Costa Rica. I’ve spent many days alone in nature. Seclusion is my
second nature. But I’ve never felt more alone than in L.A.
To me, this seed of loneliness comes from the way the city moves. From its landscape.
From its roads. Los Angeles is truly the city of roads, of highways, and of cars. It’s
a city that feels as if it was designed around the roads, instead of the other way
around. Lookin at the city from above, one would see incredible interconnectedness.
Concrete pathways that crisscross in every possible direction, connecting every part
of this massive metropolitan city. But the roads, the thing that CONNECTS point A to B,
is what makes the place so lonesome. It’s the thing that can strip life here of its
beautiful connections. Each person in their own vehicle. Hours on end spent getting from
one place to another. The streets empty. When is there time for life to happen? Through
my conversations with others, I’ve met many people who have opened up about the loneliness
they feel in this city as well. This is a shared view.
These were the thoughts and feelings I set out to approach in the making of this film. A
portrait of a city, a portrait of loneliness, told through people and their relationship
to the roads of the city.
